Isthmian League North
Stowmarket Town 2
Aveley FC 1
Match Report: Iain van der Ree
Captain, Tom Bullard grabs the 90th minute winner in a tough encounter.
A lively Aveley were in determined mood at Greens Meadow on Saturday afternoon and proved to be stiff opposition for the Old Gold & Blacks. Paul Musgrove started with the same side that beat Barking 6-1 away last Saturday with just 3 players due to injuries on the bench (all strikers). Stow’s backline marshalled by Tom Bullard keeping the marauding visitors at bay with some stout and confident defending and both sides cancelling each other out for the majority of the first half. With half time looming an excellent display of passing play saw Luke Brown find Evan Collard running towards goal to score the opener and make it 1-0 at the break.
Aveley upped the tempo further in the second half and showed why they were at the top end of the league table with George Sykes eventually getting the breakthrough and making his shot count for the visitors. Man of the Match and Isthmian League North Golden Glove award winner for November, James Bradbrook showed why he had earned that accolade firstly saving a penalty, then an instinctive save from a point-blank shot plus tipping a free kick over the bar to keep Stow in the game.
A horrendous clash saw Tevan Allen having to leave the pitch with a broken nose and concussion and adding to Muzzy’s ongoing injury concerns. As the board went up showing 4 minutes of extra time, Reggie Lambe prepared to take a corner which Tom Bullard headed downwards and into the Aveley net sealing, what looked like for much of the half, an unlikely win for the Suffolk side. Stowmarket Town’s next match is on Tuesday evening in the Suffolk Premier Cup.
