AFC Sudbury 1

Stowmarket Town 3

Match Report: Iain van der Ree

Stowmarket’s promotion push now firmly in their hands as Canvey falter.

A crowd of 423 inside AFC Sudbury’s MEL Stadium on Saturday, witnessed a polished Stowmarket team that were both clinical and ruthless from the start. The Old Gold and Blacks dominating much of the possession as they set about the home team defences looking for an early goal and that breakthrough materialised when an on-rushing Willie Clemons was fouled in the box, ex Sudbury player Craig Parker stepped up to score with a well taken penalty. With Stow pressing for a second, Chris Casement had a 25-yard freekick parried away by Sudbury goalkeeper Josh Blunkell, but it was Kane Munday running down the flanks who floated a delightful cross, from which Blunkell could only pat the ball away to recent Stow signing Ben Hunter who lifted the ball into net and gave the visitors a two-goal cushion at half time.

Sudbury pressed higher up the pitch in the second half and were nearly rewarded when substitute Marley Andrews hit the post with a well driven strike. Stowmarket weathered the early exchanges with in-form Clemons having a shot saved off the line, however the inevitable third goal came in the form of a freekick by Casement, who made no mistake this time with an unstoppable shot in front of the jubilant away support. Sudbury did manage a consolation goal against the run of play from Joshua Stokes. A red card for Clemons for dissent in injury time blemished an otherwise professional performance from Paul Musgrove’s team.

Stowmarket are now level on points at the top of the league with Aveley with a game in hand and now face second from bottom Hullbridge next Saturday.
