Craig Brown is hoping his Stowmarket Town Reserves side can start their season on a high when they visit Holland Reserves tomorrow.

The 2018-19 Thurlow Nunn Reserve League champions begin their new campaign on the road this weekend with one of their longest trips of the season.

Stow were 10 points adrift of leaders Diss Town Reserves with seven games to go, before the 2019-20 season was cut short and declared null and void.

Diss, along with Mildenhall Town Reserves, are absent from this year’s line-up, with Stow among 12 teams competing in the 2020-21 Thurlow Nunn Reserve League.

“We’re experimenting a bit this season as we’ve had a few people leave the club, and we’ve brought in some new players,” manager Brown said.

“I think we’ll be up there again. We just need to start games better. We’re finishing games well and taking teams apart.

“Holland is the furthest one for us to travel so it’s nice to get it out of the way early doors. Hopefully we can get three points and put in a good performance.”

The progression of younger players through the club has been evident during pre-season, with several of Brown’s Reserves squad involved with the first team, including Alex Clarke, who has been a regular for the Reserves over the last couple of years.

“That’s made me feel proud,” Brown said. “I’ve had Alex with me since I’ve been manager and he’s just got better and better.

“Some youngsters don’t listen, but he has a great attitude and if he keeps listening he will do well.

“It shows that the progression at the club is working. Hopefully he can stay there. I’ll always take him back with open arms, but I want him to stay there.”
