Stowmarket Town resume their Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division campaign away at Thetford Town tomorrow.

The Old Gold and Blacks have been involved in two cup competitions over the last seven days, competing in the Emirates FA Cup as well as last season’s rearranged Turners Hyundai Suffolk Premier Cup semi-finals.

After beating higher-league Yaxley 2-1 in the FA Cup last weekend, Rick Andrews’ men could not complete another win over higher-level opposition on Tuesday night, losing 4-1 to neighbours Needham Market.

It’s back to the league for Stow this weekend, as our five-game road trip takes us to Mundford Road. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Thetford…

Thetford Town v Stowmarket Town / Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division / Mundford Road / Saturday 19th September 2020 / 3pm kick-off

Setting the scene: Both sides head into this weekend looking to bounce back from defeats last time out. Stow’s defeat came in the held over Suffolk Premier Cup semi-final from last season, as they were put to the sword by Step 3 Needham Market during the week. Meanwhile, Thetford are on a run of three straight defeats, the latest a 2-0 reverse at home to Potton United in the FA Cup last weekend.

What’s the team news? It’s good news for Rick as he gets closer to having an almost fully-available squad for the first time this season. Luke Read has served his three-game suspension and is back, along with Craig Parker who had to sit out Tuesday night due to being cup tied. Robbie Sweeney returned from injury to start in the defeat to Needham, and Danny Cunningham is expected to be fit for this weekend, which leaves Christy Finch the only player on the injury list.

How are Thetford doing? The Brecklanders kicked off the new season with a 2-0 win in the FA Cup against Wellingborough Town. Former Stow midfielder Max Melanson was among the goals in that season-opening win, but since then Thetford have lost their next three games. League defeats to Whitton United (3-1) and Ely City (1-0), both away from home, were followed by a 2-0 loss against Potton United in the FA Cup last Saturday. Thetford are one of three sides, along with Woodbridge Town and Swaffham Town, yet to register a point in the Premier Division and will be keen to correct that this weekend.

What happened last time we met? It was a day to forget for Thetford when Stow last visited Mundford Road, back in late January. A hat-trick from Christy Finch, a brace from Robbie Sweeney, and goals from Anton Clarke and Joe Jefford, completed a rampant 7-0 win for the Old Gold and Blacks. Stow did the double over Thetford in the league last season, having beaten them beat 4-1 in the reverse meeting at Greens Meadow last October. The scoreline was harsh on Thetford that day, with goals from Seb Dunbar and George Quantrell in the final minutes making it finish more one sided than the game actually was.

One to watch: Former Walsham-le-Willows striker Jack Brame will be one to keep an eye out for this weekend. Brame joined Thetford from league rivals Mildenhall Town back in February, where he had scored eight goals in 17 games, but only managed one game for Thetford before the season was cut short due to the virus. Brame, who netted 20 goals for Walsham in the 2018-19 campaign, has started all four of Thetford’s games so far, and has already got off the mark with a goal in the 3-1 defeat at Whitton a fortnight ago.
