Stowmarket overcome higher league opposition to secure a place in the next round against Ipswich Town.

High flying Stowmarket entertained step 3 side Lowestoft in the first round of the Suffolk Premier Cup on Tuesday evening as the mist descended on 218 hardy souls in attendance at Greens Meadow.  It was the Old Gold and Blacks however that lifted the gloom from the start, as Paul Musgrove’s side pressed high up the pitch causing palpable concern in the visiting defences. Stow took just 10 minutes to open the scoring, when in-form Bermudan International Willie Clemons weaved his way into the box putting the ball into the back of the net with a self-assured strike. Despite Stow having much of the first half possession, it was a rare excursion by Lowestoft into opposition territory that saw James Bradbrook having to make a magnificent diving save to keep the score line at 1-0 at half time.

As the second half kicked off, it became apparent that Stowmarket weren’t going to settle on just defending a one goal lead, ruthlessly putting the Trawlerboys on the backfoot. It didn’t take long for Stow striker Luke Brown, in acres of space inside the box, to collect the ball and send it sailing in the roof of the net. With the wind knocked out their sails, Lowestoft showed little sign of urgency, allowing Stow to manage the remainder of the half to secure a second-round tie against Ipswich Town.

Stowmarket face Heybridge Swifts on Saturday afternoon at Greens Meadow in the Isthmian League North.
