Dev Has League Title In His Sights
Danny Cunningham says he has returned to Stowmarket Town with one sole aim: to help the club win the league.
The midfielder was unveiled as Stow’s first summer signing on Friday, returning for a second spell at Greens Meadow after playing for Coggeshall Town and Stanway Rovers over the last three years.
Cunningham was an integral part in Stow’s Thurlow Nunn League First Division title and promotion success back in 2016-17, scoring six times in 32 appearances.
After leaving Stow for Coggeshall early in the 2017-18 season, Cunningham won more silverware, picking up the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division title with the Essex club at the end of that campaign.
And now he hopes to bring that trophy to Greens Meadow in 2020-21, after signing up for a second stint with the Old Gold and Blacks.
“I spoke to Rick (Andrews) in the summer about possibly coming back,” Cunningham said. “I feel like them not going up was a big thing, and also the way they went out of the FA Vase.
“There was a chance to come back and it’s unfinished business. I think we’ll be strong next season. I feel like the players are a lot better than when I was here last time, and the club has generated a lot of momentum.
“I’ve come back with one aim: to win the league. I know a lot of the other boys in the squad and the quality has gone up. I’m looking forward to it.”
Stow manager Rick Andrews added: “I’m pleased to have Dev back. He’s a winner. When we looked back at last season, we had a lot of winners and had a very good season.
“But I looked at the games which we did fall short in, especially the Wroxham game in the Vase. I just think if I had him on the pitch at that time, I don’t think he would have allowed us to be off the boil for as long as we were in the first half of that game.
“He helped me deliver the First Division title for the club. He then went and won this league with Coggeshall, and I hope his experience will help us go that step further and finish what we started last season.”
